About the Audubon Society
For over a century, Audubon has worked to conserve and restore natural ecosystems for wildlife, particularly birds. This nationwide organization has built a legacy of conservation success by building a network of members, chapters, centers, and state offices. Together, they have succeeded in many seemingly impossible tasks such as the protection of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, saving the California Condor and Brown Pelican from endangerment, and restoring parts of the Everglades. Currently, there are over 41 Audubon centers and nearly 500 chapters all over the nation.
The Audubon Society Bird Count
Every year, the Audubon Society organizes the Christmas Bird Count at several of their chapters. During this event, volunteers just like you are referred to as "citizen scientists.” A 15-mile diameter circle is established by a count compiler, who then leads the citizen scientists through the designated routes of this circle. Anytime a bird is seen or heard, they are counted and tallied. At the end of the tour, all the birds are accounted for so work may begin on their care and preservation. The experience is educational, unique, and is for a good cause. The best part is that you can participate for free!
If you would like to take part in the 117th Audubon Christmas Bird Count, you must choose the chapter and circle you plan on attending. For your convenience, this Christmas Bird Count Map of the 116th annual event will give you an idea of where the circles will be. Of course, there are two located in and near Hilton Head Island!
All Audubon Christmas Bird Counts are conducted from December 14th to January 5th on select dates. You must call in advance with your chosen circle compiler to make arrangements for your tour. Volunteers of all ages are invited to attend.
