Learning to Surf on Hilton Head Island

Surfing is an exhilarating experience and a great way to connect with the outdoors.  If you have never surfed before, Hilton Head Island is an ideal place to learn with gentle waves and long beaches with sandy bottoms. (The last place you want to learn to surf is in a rocky area!)  Conditions for surfing are often just right on Hilton Head! Learning to surf can be a thrilling journey (there’s a huge learning curve and you are likely to need a lot of patience) but with the right approach, anyone can catch their first wave.

Learning from the Best

While it’s possible to learn on your own, taking a few lessons from a qualified instructor will help jump start your success. Instructors can teach you essential techniques, safety protocols, and ocean awareness. Learn from the best!

Before hitting the waves, familiarize yourself with basic ocean safety and always check local conditions. Learn about rip currents, tides, and local marine life. Always surf with a buddy (never surf alone!) and never underestimate the power of the ocean. Wearing a leash is also essential—it keeps your board close in case you wipe out, preventing it from becoming a hazard to others.  Always check local surf reports for the best conditions! Apps like Windy or NOAA Weather can provide real-time weather conditions, including wind and wave forecasts. Websites like Surfline, Magicseaweed, or Windy provide detailed surf reports, including wave height, wind speed, and tide information.

Ready to get started surfing on your own?  If yes, follow these tips and tricks we’ve assembled!

Choosing the Right Surfboard

Selecting the right surfboard is crucial for beginners. You should choose a soft-top longboard, which provides stability and makes it easier to balance. Soft-tops are less likely to cause injury when you fall, and their larger surface area gives you a better chance of catching waves. As you progress, you can experiment with different shapes and sizes.  In general, the longer the board you are surfing, the easier it is to surf on.

Paddling

Start by practicing your paddling technique on the beach. When you’re in the water, lie on your board and use a flutter kick with your legs while paddling with your arms. Keep your body centered and your head up, looking forward. Sure, you may look silly “paddling” on the beach on a surfboard but this is how all surfers practice. Give it a try!

Pop-Up Technique

The pop-up is the move that gets you from lying down to standing on the board. Practice this motion on the sand before hitting the waves. Start in a lying position, then push up with your arms and quickly bring your feet underneath you, landing in a crouched position. With practice, you’ll be able to transition quickly. The faster you can do it, the better!

Timing Your Waves

Understanding when to catch a wave is key. Watch other surfers and observe how they position themselves. Try to paddle when you see a wave approaching and start paddling harder as it gets closer. Aim to pop up as the wave begins to lift your board. Practice makes perfect!

Staying Relaxed and Having Fun

It’s normal to feel nervous when you first start surfing. Remember to breathe and stay relaxed. Embrace the learning process—every surfer falls and wipes out. The most important thing is to have fun and enjoy the experience. Celebrate small victories, whether it’s catching your first wave or successfully standing up.

Surfing Etiquette

Remember to respect the ocean and fellow surfers. Follow surf etiquette, which includes taking turns, not dropping in on others’ waves, and being aware of your surroundings. Leave no trace and ensure that you’re minimizing your impact on the environment.

Learning to surf is an exciting adventure that takes patience, practice, and a positive mindset. With the right equipment, proper instruction, and a love for the ocean, you’ll be well on your way to riding the waves, especially on Hilton Head Island where the conditions for surfing are ideal, especially for beginners. Grab your surf board on Hilton Head Island, be sure to call Forest Beach Surf & Cycle, hit the beach, and enjoy the (surf) ride!
